Are you tired of the celebrity driven circus that has been revolving around Paris Hilton? Does the hotel heiress deserve to be behind bars for her flagrant disregard for the law? As a popular media figure, should she be more responsible to set an example for the impressionable teenagers who emulate her?
The Baby Boomers or so called 'Me Generation,' on some level, weren't all that different. They were often seen as egocentric and self absorbed, as having a sense of entitlement. But, along the way, they developed the capacity for self reflection. Now, entering the retirement years, they are serving the greater good and are often referred to as the 'We Generation.' Paris Hilton can learn a lesson or two from the changes in their attitudes and behavior:
1. Taking a step back helps you see the situation from a much different angle and develop a new perspective. Listening to your inner voice can provide comfort and reassurance as you recognize how your basic character strengths support you. Focus on what's important, and try to integrate core values and personal ideals into how you view the world.
2. Let go of your concerns about the present moment and look at the bigger picture. Time passes quickly - use it to your advantage and make different choices about your future. Set new long range goals as well as short term objectives. Commit to a process of change - and then move forward, step by step.
3. Look to satisfying others instead of only giving yourself pleasure. Learn that gratitude is a very powerful emotion. Tell others what you appreciate about them. Watch their positive reaction to what you say and see how that makes you feel.
4. Increase your capacity to be resilient. Releasing tension through humor will help you begin to bounce back. It is not easy to maintain your sense of optimism when the circumstances are complicated. But focus your thoughts on what you can accomplish and manage, rather than on what you cannot.
5. When problems seem just too hard to handle, giving back provides a welcome diversion. Find your true spirit of idealism and make a contribution to those less fortunate. Be generous with your skills and time as you become involved with social activism. Change society for the better and you'll eventually transform yourself.
Back in jail and feeling a little less vulnerable, Paris Hilton seems to be singing a different tune. She now saysthat she will serve her time, not cause any more trouble and use her power to make a difference. More spiritual already, she sees herself growing emotionally from her jail experience.
Only time will tell if she is truly ready to roll up her sleeves and be a role model for the young people who look up to her. Instead of focusing on the latest clubbing venues, perhaps she will use her flair for self promotion in a more positive way. Let's hope so - for her sake and the sake of our children.

]]>Many of us remember the children’s song that helped us to learn the skeletal parts of the body. And in dentistry, the above line from the song couldn’t be more relevant. The way our bones are connected – particularly the alignment of our jaw – can have effects on our head, face, neck and other body parts.
Listen To Your Body
If you’re experiencing upper body pain or tension that doesn’t seem related to bad posture, to activities that could be straining your neck, shoulders or back, or to any specific injury, you may have misaligned jaw joints. This is called TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.
There are several symptoms and ill-effects that poor jaw alignment can have on your upper body.
Headaches
Limited ability to open the mouth
Pain behind the eyes
Pain that spreads to the shoulders, neck, and back
Spasm or pain in the muscles used for chewing
Earaches
Tingling or numbness in the fingers
Many Americans have TMD without knowing it. They consult doctors for pain relief or take over-the-counter painkillers and just live with the problem.
Tooth Grinding and Jaw Clenching
Many of us attribute our upper body tension to stress, anxiety or events in our lives. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching are common ways the body expresses its tension. Both often occur unconsciously while we’re sleeping and can put your jaw joint out of alignment. Conversely, they can be the body’s reaction to jaw joints which are misaligned from some other cause.
And while the friction of grinding can do its share of damage, a clenched jaw is also harmful. Clenching your teeth can exert up to 300 pounds of pressure, leading to fatigue in the jaw muscles and joints and causing further tooth damage.
Therefore, it’s not unusual for people who regularly grind or clench their teeth to complain of headaches, neck stiffness, tense shoulders or backs and ear pain. The stress and tension of TMD aggravates other parts of the body, leading to the chronic tension or pain we feel with headaches, backaches, and shoulder strain.
A Neuromuscular Dentist Can Help
With proper jaw alignment, your face and neck will relax and work together properly. A neuromuscular dentist can help you find this proper jaw placement. Once that problem is corrected, your body will shift into proper positioning and work more smoothly. Creating this stability gives your body better balance, relieves muscle tension and makes your sleep more restful.
A dentist who truly understands the connection between your upper body and the importance of having a properly-aligned jaw can be your greatest source of relief from chronic discomfort.
It’s important that we pay attention to what our bodies are telling us. And if your body is filled with tension, the cause could be more than just day-to-day stress, particularly if your lifestyle doesn’t point toward an obvious physical reason for your pain. In such cases, find a neuromuscular dentist who can help you determine if your upper body tension is the result of your jaw joints being out of alignment.
If you are in the St. Louis area, contact neuromuscular dentist Dr. Kirk Quigless to schedule a complimentary consultation so that he can help get you on the road to feeling better.
